6-Week Pottery Course:
“Learn to Throw”

Our 6-week wheel throwing course is a comprehensive pottery course in Sheffield, designed for complete beginners or anyone looking to build confidence on the pottery wheel. Over six weeks, you'll master the core techniques of wheel throwing, learning how to centre clay, throw a range of functional forms, trim your work and refine your skills week by week. With a maximum of just six participants, you'll enjoy expert tuition, plenty of individual guidance and a supportive studio environment. If you're looking for pottery classes in Sheffield that allow you to develop your skills at a relaxed pace, this course is the perfect next step. All clay, tools, glazing and firing are included.

The course runs once a week over six consecutive weeks, with each session 3 hours long. Once you complete the course, you will have the option to join our studio as a member!

Suitable for ages 16+ .Shorter nails are recommended for wheel throwing.

Course Journey

Our 6-week course has been carefully designed to take you from complete beginner to confident maker, with each session building on the last as you develop your skills on the pottery wheel.

  • Week 1: Learn to wedge, centre, throw and create a cylinder

  • Week 2: Refining throwing techniques and introduce shaping, throwing bowls and developing consistency

  • Week 3: Learn to throw more complex shapes, like taller forms and wider bowls.

  • Week 4: Introduction to handles, shaping bowls and trimming your previous work, adding refinement and surface detail.

  • Week 5: Turning and refining your final pieces, and introduction to glazing techniques.

  • Week 6: Finishing your pieces, with time for individual practice if desired.

Each session is 3 hours long and includes a 20 minute clean up which is an important aspect of pottery, ensuring students learn about safe and healthy working practices.

Your pieces will be ready to collect within 4 weeks.
